Education in Chennai
Many educational and research organisations may be found in
Chennai. IIT Madras, which is located in South Chennai, is India's leading
engineering education centre. The oldest state-owned universities, Anna
University and the University of Madras, are among India's best universities.
The College of Engineering, Guindy, and Madras Institute of Technology, both
constituent colleges of Anna University, as well as Alagappa College of
Technology, are India's first engineering schools. The city is home to some of
India's oldest medical colleges, including Madras Medical College (1835) and
Stanley Medical College (1938). Loyola College, Madras Christian College,
Presidency College, Stella Maris College, Women's Christian College, and
Ethiraj College for Women are among the city's notable liberal arts colleges. The
city is also home to the Indian Army's Officers Training Academy.
Connemara Public Library, first opened in 1890, is one of India's four National Depository Centres. Every newspaper and book published in India is delivered to these centres. It has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Anna Centenary Library (ACL) is a new library in Chennai's Kotturpuram neighbourhood. It is Asia's largest library, having been built at a cost of 1,720 million dollars. The central libraries at IIT Madras and Madras University are two large academic libraries that are open to the general public. The Central Leather Research Institute and the Structural Engineering Research Centre are two CSIR research institutes in Chennai. The Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI) organises an annual book fair in Chennai, which is the largest event for Tamil book publishers to display their publications. Between the last week of December and the third week of January, the fair usually lasts about ten days. The Indian Marine University in Chennai offers high-quality education in maritime management, engineering, and various pre-sea courses. This is India's only central university dedicated to marine education, with its headquarters in Chennai.
