Coast, Coffee and Culture of Chennai

Chennai popularly called as the “Gateway to the South India” has one of the distinct cultures from the other Indian cities. As a cosmopolitan centre, the city's culture reflects the city's diverse people, resulting in a distinct mix. Chennai, although being a contemporary metropolis, retains some of its old and traditional characteristics. Traditional Tamil Nadu music, dancing, and other art forms are immensely popular in the city. From traditional foods to fast meals, historic temple architecture to modern high-rises, and classical music and dance to the burgeoning nightlife, the city offers a unique cultural mix.

In Chennai almost everybody wakes up to a smell of fresh coffee beans and every family teaches the traditionally perfected method of making filter coffee. Coffee and Chennai are synonymous with each other and the tumbler and Davara are quintessential items of every kitchen here. Unlike in North where with the emergence of cafes, the coffee culture was introduced, in Chennai it always existed since it was first introduced in 19th century by the Britishers. Although the brew has transitioned in its form, taste, way of making and enjoying from traditional filter kaapi to the new age instant coffee. International Coffee chains have made the youth curious for trying the instant coffee in different forms. It has now become a meeting hub and anytime break from the traditional morning drink. Flavours like Mocha, Irish Coffee, etc. have been discovered beyond the steel glass.

Apart from its hot weather and delicious cuisines, one prominent feature of Chennai is its coastline made up of scenic beaches. Chennai is gifted with a beautiful coastline that makes it one of the prettiest city. The coastline consists of these four magnificent beaches:

·        Marina Beach- It is the second longest beach in the world and also one of the most crowded located along the Bay of Bengal.

·        Mahabalipuram- It is one of the most visually attractive beach in Chennai. It consists of huge range of architectural structures and sculptures.

·        Thiruvanmiyur- Surrounded by several restaurants and resorts making it a very relaxing and peaceful beach where people can enjoy coming a little away from the city and hence also less crowded.

·        Golden beach- One of the best for family trips with amusement park alongside it. The beach is also a well-known shooting spot for celebrities.
